Coaching Additions at the Port PDF Print E-mail
A new addition to the coaching staff at the Port will be Nigel Stevens, who will be helping with training and the reserves.
This is another great signing  for us, as Nigel has Wessex league experience, both in managing and playing. Nigel played for Newport when he was 16, under John Rayner and Derek Edwards, he also played at Ryde Sports, went on to manage Cowes Sports and finished his playing days there.
A pleased Derek Ohren confirmed "I'm delighted that Nigel has joined us, he understands the game well and his input will be most valuable to the club, I'm looking forward to working with him again."

Another appointment is Adam Shepherd and Keelen Sainsbury, as Football in the Community officers. They will be going into schools, helping with the youth section, and help with getting the grass roots of football up and running for the club.

Derek is pleased to get this additional support to help develop the club. "In the past Ian Buckman and myself ran this and made it very popular, but I'm finding it very hard to carry this on, not getting any younger, you might say ! "

For anyone interested there will be a contact number available soon but at the moment you can go through the club e-mail address for more information. Both lads have done level one in coaching and have been CRB, checked, so we hope this will help them in building links with the schools.

Derek's Update PDF Print E-mail

Only a couple of weeks gone since the season finished and in the end what a great way of finishing. In the top six in the league, gaining back the Gold cup, finishing with the Wessex team of the month for April, (which has passed everyone by except the people that it matters too and that is the players, and the management of the club, and a few supportors). I am sure that if other clubs had won it, the Wessex would have let everyone know, I heard about it from our forum !
After the previous season we had, any thing we are awarded is special to me....

Newport finished strongly to take the points against a Lymington side not prepared to give any favours after victory had been snatched away from Newport in the original match. Goals from Iain Seabrook, Richard Sprooles, Freddie Knowles and Tom McInnes killed off a spirited Lymington side and Sam Webb saved a penalty at a crucial point in the match.
